Eli Reed es uno de los iconos de la fotografía estadounidense. Dedicó su vida a su pasión, que era capturar las instantáneas impresionantes. Aquí contaremos la historia de una sesión de fotos que hizo al legendario rapero Tupac y que logró capturar algo que ningún otro fue capaz. Todo esto ocurrió mientras se grababa la película Poetic Justice.

Pero antes de comenzar con la historia, si por cualquier motivo no conoces a Eli Reed, fue un fotógrafo nacido en Nueva Jersey en el año 1946 y dedico su vida a la fotografía y al periodismo. Estudio en Harvard, ciencias políticas y fue totalmente autodidacta en la fotografía. Una vez se graduó, empezó a trabajar como freelance desde 1970.

Durante sus años como freelance destaca su trabajo en El Salvador, Guatemala y otros países centroamericanos. Gracias a estos trabajos ganó gran reputación en el medio y fue contratado por Magnun en el año 1982. Todo esto le convirtió en el primer fotógrafo negro freelance empleado por Magnun y autor de varios libros, incluyendo su obra más conocida, Black In America. 

Actualmente, se dedica a dar clase de fotoperiodismo en la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Fue nominado al premio Pulitzer en 1982. Sus trabajos más destacados giran en torno a los conflictos que hubo en América Central, La Guerra del Líbano, el golpe de 1986 de Haití y las acciones militares que hubo en Panamá en el año 1989

El encargo de fotografiar a Tupac

Si no conocías a Eli Reed ahora ya te puedes hacer una idea de quien era. Pues este increíble fotógrafo tuvo el encargo de fotografiar al legendario rapero Tupac. Esto ocurrió mientras se rodaba la película de Poetic Justice, estrenada en el año 1993. Desde que recibió el encargo, Reed se mentalizó de que haría una foto diferente de Tupac.

Tenemos un álbum hablando de los outfits de Tupac y por ende varias fotografías icónicas que le hicieron al artista. Todas ellas daba la sensación de tener una actitud desafiante y agresiva contra los periodistas que le he hicieron las fotos. La mayoría de las fotos muestran su tatuaje de "Thugh Life" y cara de muy pocos amigos.

Y, en cambio, llegó Eli Reed e hizo una sesión completamente diferente de Tupac que parecería que cambia completamente la percepción del artista. El increíble fotoperiodista tomó tan solo 3 fotografías de Shakur con su cámara Hasselblad de 4 por 5 que usó para capturar las protestas por los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos y las consecuencias mortales del conflicto en el Líbano y El Salvador.

Logró capturar la esencia humana de Tupac, de hecho dijo literalmente para Complex:

“En primer lugar, quería fotografiarlo como un ser humano. No otro tipo de toma que pudiese hacer cualquier fotógrafo. Simplemente, quería documentar ese momento y a esa persona. Si hubiera empezado a pensar en que esta imagen es una parte más importante de su legado o lo que sea, me habría detenido como, Detente, imbécil. Solo vive el momento y toma la foto. Me dejo llevar por la intuición. Mira con tus ojos y tu mente.”
